New Medicare Benefit for Aortic Aneurysm Screening Will Boost Patient Volumes for Surgical Repair

Starting in 2007, Medicare will pay for some patients over age 65 to get an ultrasound screening test to detect the presence of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a ballooning of the main artery that can burst and cause a patient's death. The provision was part of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, signed into law by President Bush on Feb. 8. Because 75% of patients with AAAs do not have symptoms, screening programs could identify a significantly larger patient population eligible for surgical repair, according to a recent Top Technology Trends (T3) Review from Sg2. Supporters of the benefit estimated that approximately 58,000 people could be screened in 2007.
